      Floy S. Hyde

BINGHAMTON Dr. Floy S. Hyde, of Mountain View, died Dec. 27, 2000, at the Wilson Memorial Medical Center in Binghamton.

She was born May 28, 1902, in Chateaugay, the only child of George E. and Mary Whipple Salls.

She was educated in Malone schools and graduated from Franklin Academy in 1919.

From 1924 to 1956, she and her husband, L. Eldred Hyde, owned and operated the summer resort hotel Hyde-Park-in-the-Adirondacks, at Mountain View. It was out of this experience that she authored two books, Water Over the Dam at Mountain View in the Adirondacks and Adirondack Forests, Fields, and Mines.

After earning the degree of doctor of philosophy from Columbia University in 1949, she joined the executive staff of the Board of Education of the Presbyterian Church US in the national office in Richmond, Va. Later, she took on an executive position with the National Council of Churches in the USA, in New York City. In both of these positions she was responsible for formulating new regional and national programs for the development of lay leadership in the church.

From 1959 to 1967, Dr. Hyde was associate professor of religion at Hartwick College in Oneonta.

Dr. Hyde had held leadership positions on both local and state boards of the American Association of University Women and of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also the recipient of many academic honors and was listed in the first edition of Who's Who Of American Women.

In Malone, Dr. Hyde was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church since 1912, and of the Adirondack Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years.

After the death of her husband in 1981, Dr. Hyde continued to enjoy returning each summer to her home at Mountain View and being a part of the community.

She was a leader and organist at the Union Protestant Church of Mountain View for many summer sessions.

Dr. Hyde is survived by one son, Gilbert Hyde, and his wife, Leora of Winter Springs, Fla.; also by four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A son, George Albert Hyde, predeceased her in 1956, as did an infant daughter in 1928.

A memorial service will be announced later to be held this summer at the Union Protestant Church of Mountain View. Private interment services will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family in the Morningside Cemetery of Malone.

Arrangements are by the Spaulding Funeral Home of Malone.
