James and Emily lived in Clarenceville, Quebec until Spring 1860 when they decided to move to Stanstead County. This meant a trip of more than fifty miles to the east and crossing Lake Memphremagog on the ice. They moved all their possessions on a double sled and started across;about halfway the horses suddenly stopped....because they had come upon open water! James then had to walk ahead leading the horses and it was quite a distance up the lake before they found a safe place to cross, Harvey's Bay. they settled on the east shore (Cedarville) in a log cabin on a farm. | James Owen Bullock

Notes for SAMUEL JAYNES BUTLER: from Bonnie Fletcher Eggert - 4/2001
>From information passed from Nancy Egge of Providence, RI, a descendant of Samuel Jaynes Butler, to Lois Ward North of Linwood, Kansas to Amy Rogers Pineger Fletcher, wife of Benjamin Butler Fletcher of Herbert, IL:
(my grandfather) born North Hero VT, emigrated to NY State and then to Wisconsin with his family after the Civil War because his brothers and families had taken land grants. Joined regular army just after the Civil War. Did occupational duty in Kentucky, Alabama, Missouri. Came back to Middle West. Was in some of the Indian uprisings. He had a hole in his ankle that wept and needed attention for as long as he lived from a poison arrow. He came to Lynn after his discharge. Ran a grocery store and later was city blacksmith. He married Margaret Elizabeth Dalton on Feb. 11 1879. Had five children...
My grandfather was very proud of and missed his family very much. He used to tell my mother to always remember that first she was a Butler, then a Methodist, and then a Republican. And he meant it too. My mother resolved that as soon as she was able she would get to know some of her relatives and she did go and meet a great many of them and stayed in their homes. She said it was a thrill to be at one reunion with 72 Butlers.
My grandfather told me a great many stories of the west and the army but as I was very young I do not remember too much about them. I do remember the day that Buffalo Bill Cody came to visit him (Samuel Jaynes Butler). Buffalo Bill had a son in Swampscott which is a town next to Lynn with whom he used to stay at times. One day he came on the street car to visit my grandfather and he wore his buckskin jacket and big hat and his hair was long just as it is in the pictures. Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show was opening in Lynn the next day and my grandfather took me to see the parade and Buffalo Bill seeing us standing on the sidewalk tipped his hat and I was so frightened of the Indians who were with him that I hid my head against my grandfather. They were of course the Black Hawks and my grandfather had told me many a gory tale about.
My mother kept in contact with her people for a long time and then my father was an invalid for fourteen years and between being tied down and not having the heart to write much she has not been in touch with them lately. - NE - 01 Jan 1954
